Elementary
At Hollywood Schoolhouse, our dynamic elementary curriculum is founded on the belief that children are naturally curious and capable of profound learning when provided with the right environment. Rooted in inquiry-based learning, our program encourages students to take an active role in their education by exploring their interests, generating thoughtful questions, and seeking deeper understanding.
Through hands-on activities, experiments, and collaborative projects, students immerse themselves in topics that connect across disciplines, developing critical problem-solving skills and engaging with real-world issues.
We also prioritize empathy and social responsibility through initiatives like Character Strong, which helps students develop key skills in communication, collaboration, and problem-solving. In our highly diverse community, we emphasize character development to foster respect for different perspectives, empowering students to build meaningful relationships and make a positive impact on the world around them.
At Hollywood Schoolhouse, our students leave not only with strong academic abilities but also with a deep sense of responsibility to themselves, their peers, and the world they will help shape.
Lower Elementary (K-3)
Hearts & Minds: Growing Kind Humans at HSH
Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the heart of our K–3 classrooms. Using the Character Strong curriculum, students embrace kindness, bravery, honesty, and responsibility in everything they do. In K–2, children engage in morning meetings, role-play, mindfulness, and empathy-building activities, while family culture and community partnerships ensure every child feels valued. By third grade, students deepen their emotional skills with Zones of Regulation, exploring fairness, justice, and thoughtful decision-making through stories and real-life discussions.
At HSH, SEL is more than a lesson; it’s our identity. We nurture compassionate, reflective children ready to make a positive impact.
Math Magic: Building Bright Thinkers from the Ground Up
Here, math is more than just numbers; it’s an exciting playground for the mind! From counting cubes in Kindergarten to mastering bar modeling in third grade, students learn to think flexibly, solve problems creatively, and understand the “why” behind the “what.”
Our K–3 math journey follows a concrete-to-abstract path inspired by Singapore Math. In the early years, children explore numbers using hands-on tools like ten frames, Unifix cubes, and playful number stories. They build number sense with confidence and joy, comparing, counting, and making sense of math concepts.
As students grow, so does the complexity. 1st and 2nd Graders work on place value, skip counting, and multi-step problems using visual models and real-world examples. By 3rd Grade, students dive into multiplication, division, and four-digit numbers with bar models, arrays, and collaborative problem-solving.
Across all grades, students actively explain their thinking, try new strategies, and discover the magic of math through inquiry and exploration. We nurture curious mathematicians who don’t just do math; they truly understand it.
Language Arts: Where Stories Spark and Voices Shine
Our K–3 Language Arts program helps young readers become confident communicators and creative thinkers. With a balanced mix of phonics, rich literature, and joyful writing, students build strong skills in reading, writing, listening, and speaking while discovering the magic of words.
Kindergartners start by playing with sounds, learning sight words, and writing their first sentences. 1st Graders explore global tales and personal stories, focusing on structure, grammar, and voice through Writer’s Workshop. In 2nd Grade, comprehension deepens as students analyze characters and write adventure stories and thoughtful responses.
By 3rd Grade, students embark on deeper literary adventures with novels like El Deafo and Pie. They collaborate in literature circles, craft vivid narratives, and develop expository and research writing. Grammar lessons, graphic organizers, and vocabulary study support their growing clarity and purpose.
From rhymes to research, our students become skilled, inspired readers and writers ready to share their voices with the world.
Civic Stars: Growing Citizens of Curiosity & Care
Social Studies is a journey of self, community, and world discovery. From learning kindness and responsibility in Kindergarten to exploring government and economics in 3rd Grade, K–3 students build empathy and big-picture thinking through hands-on adventures.
Kindergartners begin by discovering who they are and what it means to belong, learning about rules and community helpers through stories and songs. 1st Graders expand their view, mapping their place from family to continents.
2nd Graders explore what makes communities work by visiting local landmarks and running a classroom marketplace. 3rd Graders dive into history and civics, studying the Tongva people, government branches, and economies, finishing with a free-market simulation.
Through maps, timelines, and field trips, students don’t just learn facts; they develop critical thinking, ask big questions, and see themselves as active, caring members of their communities.
Small Scientists, Big Discoveries
Guided by Next Generation Science Standards, our K–3 students don’t just learn; they explore, question, and get hands-on with the world around them.
Kindergarten students engage their senses to explore and investigate weather patterns, animal characteristics, and the fundamental qualities that define living things. First graders dive into sound and light, create weather maps, and connect science with storytelling.
Second graders become Earth experts, building clay islands, studying seed dispersal, and conducting experiments. Third graders explore fossils, environmental change, and engineering challenges to help animals survive. They study life cycles, pollinators, bullfrogs, and heredity through hands-on observations and digital field journals.
From seeds to soundwaves, clay to code, our young scientists embrace science with creativity and joy—making every lesson a real-world adventure.
Upper Elementary (4-6)
Hearts & Minds: Growing Kind Humans
As students grow, so does their ability to care, reflect, and lead. 4th Graders broaden their independence by confidently assuming greater responsibility for classroom routines and daily procedures. They set SMART goals and learn to navigate friendships with empathy and courage. Through identity webs, role-play, and restorative conversations, they discover who they are and how to support others. In fifth grade, students sharpen focus and executive functioning skills with Character Strong lessons, morning meetings, and mindful check-ins. They practice time management, reflect on choices, and lean into leadership with kindness. Sixth graders develop as thoughtful community leaders, navigating academic responsibilities and emotional growth with growing independence and guidance from a strong social-emotional learning foundation. They learn to recognize when to pause, take initiative, or offer support—demonstrating the values they have cultivated throughout their journey. Social-emotional learning grows with them, helping each student build strong minds, kind hearts, and a lasting sense of purpose.
Marvelous Math Minds
Math becomes a playground of patterns and puzzles in 4th Grade. Students explore multi-digit numbers, place value, and addition and subtraction strategies. They dive into multiplication, division, factors, and multiples, discovering the meaning behind statements such as "three times as many." Fractions and decimals take center stage with number lines, bar models, and real-world problems. 5th Graders stretch their skills with long division, large number multiplication, and the order of operations. They become fluent in fractions, finding equivalents, and adding and subtracting them confidently through games and discussions. 6th Graders explore prime and composite numbers, square and cube roots, and negative integers. They apply fraction and decimal skills to real contexts and delve into ratios, rates, and percentages. Using journals and graph paper, students problem-solve and communicate their thinking like seasoned mathematicians. Math here is joyful discovery and curious minds at work.
Wordsmith Wonders
In 4th Grade, students dive into stories like Save Me a Seat and Esperanza Rising, exploring characters, figurative language, and big ideas. They deepen their comprehension by making predictions, drawing comparisons, and analyzing key details, while developing opinion pieces and realistic fiction with a clear voice and well-organized structure.
